MY PATH TO BIRTHWORK

When I was pregnant with my son in 2018, I allowed the stories of “birth is scary” and “just do what the doc says” to push me into the passenger seat of my own life. The consequences were more than just a lukewarm birth experience; it nearly cost my son his life. I was sitting in the NICU, my baby days old but yet to be held or fed by his parents, wondering “how could I have let this happen?”

In the months following, I looked for answers and was crushed to discover that what happened to my son & I was fully preventable. I learned about the crisis of Black maternal and infant mortality rates. I spoke with friends who had experiences where they were discriminated against and coerced into births that left them traumatized, too.

Finally I learned with a birth doula was and immediately started my training. I began with labor and birth, expanded to homebirths, and finally completed my fullspectrum training that equipped me with the skills to support other pregnancy experiences from a trauma-informed, harm reductive, culturally conscious, anti-oppressive lens.

It was witnessing uninterrupted birth brought me to a spiritual awakening and I began bringing Reiki and intuitive guidance into my practice. Realizing that energetic support was the most important piece for my clients (plus hospital policies being unpredictable since March 2020), I shifted away from attending in person and have been delightfully surprised by how deep and magical virtual support can be.

Ultimately I’m here to be the person I needed when I became a new mother - the person who listens without judgment, speaks with facts not fear, sees the potential in every person to achieve their desires, guides them back to themselves on their hard days, and overall be that educated hype woman every pregnant and postpartum family deserves.
